Designing for the presentation of flowers and plants
Designing for the presentation of flowers and plants
I have traveled throughout Asia for years as a buyer of decorative products, searching in vain for items more suitable for today’s home and more representation of today’s Asian trend. It is only natural that I keep asking myself these questions:
Why are Asian buildings always perceived as pagoda look-a likes? Why are Asian art and craft too frequently categorized as antiques? Why do Asian countries build their “modern” skylines to look like that of a western city? Why do Asian made products frequently look like either copies of western designs or copies of ancient artifacts?
It was when we started our association with the Hawaiian market that I sensed an appropriate platform to seek hands-on answers to these questions. Hawaii is blessed with beautiful, exotic flowers. It has a population with mixed cultures that absolutely adore not only the beauty of flowers but also the placement and presentation of them.
This gave me the motivation to start designing flowers vases made of wood. I feel that wood is most naturally related to flowers, and the hand-made components signify the traditional Asian craftsmanship.
